Finding Balance with WNBA Star Monique Billings

We had the privilege of speaking with Monique Billings about the release of her recent book Finding Balance. Monique is passionate about wellness and helping others. She told us how, as a professional power forward in the WNBA, finding balance is a vital part of her life. Finding Balance delves into Monique’s daily practices that keep her balanced on and off the court.

Monique was a four year letterman at Santiago High School in Corona California. Coming out of high school, she was ranked in the top 30 players by recruiters. She started her career at UCLA where she was named to the Pac-12 all freshman team. Her sophomore season she started in all 35 games. Billings remained a starter for her entire college career and led the Bruins with her high scoring records and rebounds. After UCLA she was drafted to the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA. She now plays for the Dallas Wings and has shown no sign of slowing down!

We asked Monique how she manages to stay focused on her goals and block out negativity in her life. She told us that she uses “self-talk,” a practice she first learned at UCLA. “Self-talk” involves mantras and positive affirmations that she details in her book. Monique also told us about her “next-play mentality,” which means focusing on the “next play” when things don’t go to plan. She went on to give us lots of priceless advice which she delves deeper into in her book. This included replenishing and nourishing yourself every single day, taking time for yourself, believing in yourself, dreaming big, and that wellness is an ongoing journey, not a destination.

Monique says she is always striving to be better and takes comfort in that. She shared with us her favorite quote that her Dad told her when she was young, “Be better than yesterday, but not as good as tomorrow.”
