Mayor Eric Adams talks 2024 Election, Mental Health, and more

In an exclusive interview, iWomanTV Founder and CEO Cathleen Trigg-Jones sat down with New York City’s “Women’s Mayor” Eric Adams to discuss his plans and initiatives that will make NYC the most woman-forward city in America.

On Kamala Harris

Mayor Eric Adams expressed his support for Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign after President Joe Biden officially dropped out of the race a month ago. When asked why he is backing Harris, his answer was simple: She represents our country and, more specifically, the melting pot that is his own, New York City. To her critics, Mayor Adams had this to say:

“You cannot become a senator, you cannot become a prosecutor, you cannot become what she has accomplished — a VP, if you didn't have the credentials to be able to do so. She can play on the big stage.”

On the impact of Governor Kathy Hochul

The Adams Administration recently announced a $40 million plan to go toward supporting women’s initiatives. Having a partner in politics like Governor Hochul, who shares Mayor Adams’ passions for women’s rights, public safety, and equality, has helped to propel these initiatives forward. Working in tandem is important for any team, but especially when people’s livelihoods are at stake, and that is why Mayor Adams and Governor Hochul strive to support each other in their plans for New York.

On Mental Health

Nationally, we have been looking at a mental health crisis for years, and unfortunately, that is not different in the city of New York. When looking at populations in poverty, those incarcerated, or kids in foster care, the numbers grow exponentially. According to Mayor Adams, over 50% of the inmates at Riker’s Island have mental health issues. So, what is going to be done about it?

Mayor Adams discussed his desire to focus more of the city’s resources on building state-of-the-art mental health facilities as opposed to throwing more money into a prison system that is not helping to actually rehabilitate its inmates. As a former police officer, Adams has seen firsthand what issues intensify when people are incarcerated and not treated.

On Women’s Rights

Mayor Adams has long been a supporter of women’s rights. His administration is primarily filled with appointments of women deputies, and he continuously shows his backing of women by putting his money where his mouth is.

The Mayor’s women-forward agenda has a substantial fund dedicated to its success, and according to Mayor Adams himself, he and his staff have already reached 70% of the initiatives they set out to achieve.

In addition to the terrific plans outlined by Mayor Adams in this special report, Cathleen also touches on how the city’s leader stays healthy, what his go-to meal is, and all the exciting details on iWomanTV’s upcoming event, “The Global Spotlight on Women,” hosted at the Mayor’s home, Gracie Mansion.
