Off Page Film Festival TrailblazHER Award Winner

iWoman’s mission is to uplift filmmakers’ voices so their women-centered stories are heard globally. At the 2023 Off Page film festival, iWoman presented the TrailblazHER Award to the film with a women-led team whose message resonated with the message of iWomanTV.

The winner’s film is called Birds of the Air, a story about a transgender teenager who is not yet out to her family. It follows her journey as she sneaks out in public as her fully authentic house for the first time.

According to the director, Giselle Muse, the term “Birds of the Air” is a reference to a Matthew chapter in the Bible. It says, “the birds did not reap nor shall not throw away, and the barns, but yet your heavenly father feeds them. Aren’t you more valuable than that?”

For writer and producer Jennifer Koiter, this story was born out of being bothered by the attitude that trans folks are “a mistake.” She said no one should feel like a mistake, and wanted to write a story that showed the humanity of the transgender experience.

The creators of the film said it was important to them to have a diverse crew helping them tell their story. Giselle emphasized the importance of having different voices in order to tell an authentic story that involves many perspectives.

Because of their commitment to telling this unique story through a female lens, “Birds of the Air” is the recipient of the iWoman TrailblazHER Award!
